Start by facing the mirror, lifting your collar and draping your bow tie around your neck. The first step is to make sure that the left side of the bow tie is just about two inches longer than the right as it's hanging over your neck.
Take the longer left side and cross it over the top of the shorter right side.
Pull the left side underneath the right side then up towards your chin. Take both ends of the bow tie and pull nice and tight until the bow tie is snug enough that it won’t move.
Take the right-hand side of the bow tie and move it out of the way over your right shoulder. Pull the left-hand side of the bow tie out to the left side placing your right index finger pointing upwards in the centre.
Bring the end of the bow tie underneath your chin by folding the end over your right index finger.
Holding your bow tie firmly in the centre, bring the right-hand side of the bow tie back from over your shoulder.
Fold this over your finger in the centre so it hangs down the middle.
Take each side of the bow and gently bring them forwards and together in the midline. Hold the two ends with your right hand. This will create a little hole at the back of the bow tie.
While continuing to hold the bows of the bow tie forward, take hold of the central part of the tie hanging down the front at its widest point. With your left hand, swing this across clockwise to the left.
Now push this halfway through the hole at the back with your left index finger, pushing from left to right. Make sure you do not pull it all the way through. You will now have the loose form of your bow tie.
Gently slide this back portion of the tie from side to side so that it gradually tightens. Make sure to shape the ‘bows’ as you do this. Continue to do this until the knot is tight and the bows look formed.
Now pull your collar down over the bow tie, smile in the mirror and you’re ready to enjoy yourself.
