Portraits in Pink: Alexander Beer

Sunday 10 March is Mother’s Day in the UK, making award-winning photographer Alex Beer’s intimate portrait of his beloved grandmother even more poignant in our latest Portraits in Pink

What was the inspiration behind your portrait?

During the pandemic, I documented my grandma’s life, as she wanted to keep seeing her family as it brought her joy and kept her sane.

What sort of photography do you specialise in?

I love balancing the natural world with human stories, mixing things up with stills and moving images. Portraits with landscape, documentary, still life, while also using different mediums – 35mm, 120, Polaroid and large format etc.

Who or what inspires you creatively?

I get inspiration from multiple sources: movies, documentaries, photo books, exhibitions etc. But also just getting lost and chatting to people.

Generally speaking, what makes a good picture?

For me, it can be a mixture of joy, nostalgia or awe. Other times it can be discomfort, sadness or even anger, forcing us to confront challenging truths.

What’s the most memorable picture you’ve taken?

Right now, every image of my grandma is memorable, and the time spent with her precious. I guess with these images I kind of want to stay there forever with her.

Finally, what do you look for in a shirt?

A tailored fit, mixed with comfort and movement.
