Essential Eveningwear

With awards season in full swing, now is the time to hit refresh on your formal wardrobe. Whatever 2024 – and beyond – has in store, Thomas Pink has the ultimate suit for you

The Tuxedo

Even though male celebs are embracing their inner extrovert (see Timothée Chalamet’s spangly ensemble and Barry Keoghan’s textured red suit with aristocratic jewellery at the Golden Globes), the classic black tux will never go out of fashion. Forget hiring one and invest in a beautifully tailored tux of your own. Specifically, our black Tailored Fit pure wool evening jacket made from 100 per cent wool, with a classic shawl collar. Woven in Yorkshire and naturally dyed, this foolproof tux will see you through every wedding and black-tie event.

The Modern Suit

Modern menswear has seen a demand for more unstructured formal styles made from relaxed, stretchy fabrics. Esquire magazine hailed 2023 the ‘year of the baggy suit’, and 2024 seems to be – well – following suit. Comfort remains king, which is why our Tailored Fit merino wool unstructured jacket and matching trousers make the ultimate modern suit. The unlined structure creates a versatile silhouette that can be dressed up or down. It’s ideal for work, weddings or even throwing on over a pair of smart jeans.

The Classic Check

As much as we’re seeing avant-garde and oversized styles dominate the red carpet in the 2020s, a classic Prince of Wales check will never go out of style. The Scottish print was adopted by the then Prince of Wales – the future King Edward VII – in the late 19th century, but was made fashionable by his son, Edward VIII, he of abdication notoriety and arguably the most dapper member of the British royal family in recent times. Having said that, his great-nephew King Charles III is perhaps the biggest champion of Prince of Wales check suits, often paired with colourful shirts and striped ties. But the style icon most likely to convince you to go head-to-toe in this check is Steve McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair. Add a matching waistcoat at your next formal do for a masterclass in retro-cool dressing.

The All-Rounder

Another timeless fabric that’s immune to fads or trends is houndstooth. We make our navy blue Tailored Fit houndstooth wool jacket from 100 per cent wool woven by heritage Yorkshire mill Alfred Brown. The result is an unlined suit jacket that’s slightly more generous in fit for a modern silhouette. Navy is a winning alternative to black (which can often look a little too funeral) and this handy all-rounder can be thrown over just about anything for instant elevation.

The Wool-Silk One

Don’t be afraid of texture when going formal. Silk and velvet may scream festive, but anything goes on the red carpet, with diamanté, brocade and satin stealing the show and putting modern menswear firmly in the spotlight. Our blue and white Tailored Fit wool silk woven unstructured jacket is contemporary and versatile, made from a unique silk-wool blend for a luxurious finish. The fit is unstructured but the suit still makes a statement, without going overboard.
