When it comes to weddings, it would be safe to say that the spotlight tends to be on the bride. Women have a dizzying array of choice when shopping for gowns, while their betrothed is often side-lined and overlooked.

But the notion of a groom having little to no interest in the big day, or not being trusted to do much beyond simply turning up in any old suit is as antiquated as a dowry. Men can have just as much input and fun as their partner when it comes to wedding planning – including their ensemble. They are also increasingly embracing the occasion as a chance to indulge and shop for something that truly reflects their personality. Just look at R&B supremo Usher. Just hours after his knockout half-time performance at this year’s Super Bowl, the singer married his long-time girlfriend, Jennifer Goicoechea, in Sin City. The bride wore an offbeat white jumpsuit, while the groom wore sunglasses and a slinky black tuxedo worn under a white fur coat. Understated it wasn’t, but we would expect nothing less. Across the pond, last year publisher Jefferson Hack (former partner of Kate Moss) married model Anna Cleveland in stately British style. But the fashionable groom subverted expectations in a baby-blue double-breasted suit with a silver-grey tie and shiny patent black shoes – proving you don’t have to stick to traditional fits or colours.

‘There are so many traditions and “rules” to wedding attire,’ comments Thomas Pink product director, Martin Holmes. ‘However, when it comes to choosing shirts, it is sometimes an after-thought. But put a little bit of effort in and it can all be worth it.’

A shirt can be a safe starting point for men who may be a little overwhelmed at the prospect of shopping for their wedding suit. The nature of the day will dictate how you dress and the fabrics chosen: is it black tie or smart-casual? Beach, country retreat, church or town hall? While some brides (and grooms) may want to know exactly what their betrothed and their entourage will be wearing at the altar, others like to keep it a surprise. The former can be helpful to tie both looks together.

As a rule of thumb, it is suggested to avoid checks and stripes and stick with plain colours for shirts; looking to ties or pocket squares to add a hint of colour that is complementary to your partner’s outfit,’ Holmes adds. ‘White is the default choice, but there are other options.’ Here are our key picks for wedding season 2024:
