Thomas Pink’s Guide To Transeasonal Layering

The clouds are rolling in, and our guide on how to dress for those in-between days has arrived just in time.

Though we’re not quite ready to admit it, we might have almost seen the back of summer. Unless an unseasonable heatwave makes a last-minute appearance (a fool’s optimism), the slight chill in the air and gathering clouds have us looking to our autumnal archives for sartorial inspiration.

But alas, the thought of jumping straight into those heavy-duty rollnecks and shearling-lined jackets is making us feel a bit hot under the collar. What’s one to do? The answer lies in transeasonal layering for those in- between days. Never too hot, never too cold, an arsenal of easily layered pieces is key to navigating the increasingly inclement weather between August and October – sans goosebumps or sweat marks.

Navy Blue Chore Jacket

The Chore Jacket

Fear not, we’ve not arrived at big-coat weather just yet. Those can’t- make-their-minds-up months call for something like the chore jacket, with a durable cotton twill serving to take the edge off less-than- favourable weather. Inspired by classic workwear yet elevated courtesy of horn buttons, it can be layered over a Thomas Pink polo for the ultimate smart-casual statement, but works equally well on off-duty occasions thrown over a T-shirt with jeans.

The Gilet

Those men in finance are on to something; the gilet really is a style failsafe. Not ready to fully acknowledge the dropping temperature? Fewer extra sleeves make easing yourself in all the more appealing. Light enough to throw in your bag for after-work commutes, our padded gilet is filled with low-profile, premium insulation to keep you just the right amount of warm. Better still, it can even be worn as an additional layer under bigger coats and jackets once those balmy summer days are well and truly distant memories.

Navy Blue & Neutral Cotton Twill Check Overshirt with Throat Latch

Dark Navy Blue Varsity Bomber Jacket

The Overshirt

A year-round staple in our rotation, a shirt is always our natural go-to. But when the winds of seasonal change are blowing, your standard cotton number might feel a bit thin. This is where our overshirt comes in. Artisanally crafted in Japan – the spiritual home of the contemporary overshirt – with a thicker cotton weave, it offers a bit more protection from the weather.

Its checked design nods to the tartan patterning synonymous with the colder seasons, gearing us up for the encroaching chill, but its bright blue colourway carries the cloud-free skies of summer along for the sartorial ride. Worn open over a plain white T-shirt, it’s a piece that’s just about as versatile as it gets.

The Varsity Jacket

Imagine the scene: you’re wearing a T-shirt, sitting in an all-but- abandoned pub garden, desperately clinging onto the hope that, any second now, the sun will come out. Someone has to be the first to put their jacket on. Wouldn’t you at least want to admit defeat looking good? Enter the Varsity bomber jacket. An urban staple that lends itself effortlessly to neither-here-nor-there weather, its moleskin fabric and suede-like handle will see you warmed up long enough for one more round alfresco.
