Portraits in Pink: Lauren Maccabee

02.12.2023

This month we talk to the fashion and portrait photographer about her inspirations, favourite snaps and capturing the ‘essence of a person’

PORTRAITS IN PINK

What was the inspiration behind your portrait?

I love finding beauty in the everyday and the mundane. I’m drawn to those in-between, spontaneous moments and capturing the essence of a person.

What sort of photography do you specialise in?

Portraiture and fashion. When I started shooting I had more of a documentary approach, which still ties into my work too.

Who or what inspires you creatively?

I’m inspired by so many things! Mainly light, shape and form, my friends and family, photographers I follow on Instagram. I’m also inspired a lot by paintings – particularly when there’s really beautiful light.

Generally speaking, what makes a good picture?

I’m always drawn to composition and colour. But ultimately I think a good photograph makes you feel something too

What has been the most memorable picture you’ve taken?

It’s a photo I took last year in Puglia. I don’t usually take my camera on holiday, because it’s quite large to carry around. But last year I did, and I was on the rocks watching everyone in the sea below me. I felt like I was watching a scene from a film – the light was beautiful and there were all these people in the water. Some were jumping in, others were just swimming along. There were teenagers flirting – and laughter and chaos. I was glad I had my camera then.

Finally, what do you look for in a shirt?

First the fabric and secondly the cut. I love a shirt to be a little boxy and oversized.
