Lessons In Layering

Winter means getting creative with comfy layers. Discover our five favourite contemporary ways to style Thomas Pink essentials

Wear a roll neck under a shirt

A plain-coloured roll-neck sweater is something every man should have in his wardrobe. It’s classic yet modern and eminently versatile. Speaking of which, you may not have considered wearing a roll neck as your foundation layer, but it works surprisingly well worn just-so. Whether your trusty polo neck is peeking out from under a gilet, a shirt in a complementary shade or even as the base layer under a shirt and formal blazer, it’s a stylish, unexpected look that’s sure to spark a trend in the office.

Head-to-toe monochrome dressing

Take a leaf from the Scandi and French fashion crowds’ style book with the monochrome trend. It looks effortlessly chic and is, in fact, rather effortless to pull off. The absence of bright colour and garish logos also screams quiet luxury à la Succession. Simply compile your layers based around neutral colours in mutual shades, such as our stone-coloured unlined modern Mac and matching Tailored Fit twill flat front trousers. Underneath, wear a neutral shirt and complementary tie (matching accessories really pull the look together). Lighter tones may appear a little tricky to pull off but don’t be scared; the result is modern and elegant and breaks up the usual dark winter palette.

Add a pop of colour

On the other hand, a well-considered pop of colour can introduce a playful edge to an outfit. Go for darker trousers and a matching jacket with our signature coral pink shirt adding a cheerful layer. Failing that, try a jaunty accessory, such as one of our woven striped scarves for extra insulation and style points.

Mix and match formal and casual pieces

It can be difficult to strike the right smart-casual balance with layers when the temptation is to pile on as many as possible, resulting in an outfit that’s barely Zoom appropriate. Why not try mixing formal and casual pieces to break up the monotony of winter dressing and create a unique, fashionable look? Try an unbuttoned plain shirt worn under our Merino wool v-neck sweater with a smart herringbone wool blazer paired with jeans (yes, really) and a plain belt to bring it all together.

Wear double shirts

Admittedly, this look is for the bold and fashion-forward who have flown straight in from Milan fashion week. Wearing two shirts at the same time works when both garments are similar in colour and, crucially, different in size – with the first layer worn in a straightforward, buttoned manner and the outer layer in a louche, overshirt style. Wear both unbuttoned with the outer layer untucked and team with gold jewellery if you’re feeling especially avant-garde. Recently, fashion has favoured the brave, so don’t be afraid to experiment with your personal style for 2024 – and beyond.
