How To Dress For A Winter Wedding

Thomas Pink offers top tips on dressing to impress when temperatures drop – whether you’re the groom, best man or guest

Summer is wedding season. But the winter months bring a unique, magical quality all of their own. What could be more romantic, after all, than a snow-covered landscape, roaring fireplace and twinkling fairy lights? And while you might not be blessed with a chocolate-box frosty backdrop (rather: grey, wet and freezing), winter weddings are engineered to be mostly indoors, ensuring people stick around for the speeches and late-night boogying. Prices tend to be much cheaper outside peak season too, so it’s little surprise that winter weddings have soared in popularity in recent cash-strapped times.

But a winter wedding does pose one important challenge: what to wear. When temperatures hover around freezing, it can be difficult to master fashion and functionality. Whether you’re the groom, groomsman or a guest, nailing winter wedding attire is essential for looking dapper while staying warm. So, here’s Thomas Pink’s tips on navigating chilly nuptials with grace.

Black & White Classic Fit POW Check Wool Jacket

The Foundation: A Tailored Suit

Let’s get back to basics. A well-tailored suit should be your wedding go-to, whatever the season. But for the autumn-winter months, opt for a suit made of heavier fabrics, such as wool or tweed. Our Merino Houndstooth Jacket and 100% wool Prince of Wales Check blazer (both woven in Yorkshire) are perfect for formal occasions, providing plenty of insulation against the cold and exuding timeless elegance. If the dress code is black tie, you’ll be pleased to know that Thomas Pink provides all the essentials (even down to the cummerbund). And our quality, Italianmade cotton evening shirts and pure wool dinner jackets are exquisitely suited to cooler temperatures (nobody likes black tie in the sweltering heat, after all).

Stylish Layers

Staying warm is all about clever layering. But ‘cosy’ doesn’t always equal stylish, and you will want to eschew anything too informal and/or bulky. If you want to add a sweater to your ensemble, stick to plain, muted colours and luxury materials, such as our Merino Wool Crew Neck or V-Neck jumpers. A crisp shirt collar popping out over the neckline will keep the look smart-casual. Or try something a little different with our Merino Wool Roll Neck sweater in brown, black, navy or festive burgundy. Worn under a complementary blazer, it’s a foolproof formal look that requires minimal effort. Think James Bond chilling in a luxury ski resort vibes.

Festive Accessories

No, we don’t mean a light-up Christmas jumper – no matter how informal the wedding dress code might be. If you’re attending a December wedding, there may be temptation to go full-on festive, but you don’t want to veer into novelty territory. Christmas is all about texture and colour, so lean into this with some stylish – and subtle – choices. Add a pop of pizzazz with a silk tie in a block colour, and a cheeky flash of a vibrant sock will always raise a smile (match both socks and tie for added style points). Jewel tones and tartan prints are fashionably festive, so why not opt for our lush velvet evening jacket (in navy and emerald green) for some on-point wedding attire or our Green & Navy Tailored Fit Wool Black Watch Check Evening Jacket, finished with a dapper bow tie.

Get Your Coat

Don’t spoil your well-constructed suit by covering it up with a tattered old jacket. A beautiful winter coat in mint condition can really pull an outfit together and add an effortless formal touch; so you won’t feel bad about keeping it on while posing for outdoor snaps. Just make sure to go with a classic style and muted colours for optimum versatility. Our new cashmere pea coat is insulating and butter soft to the touch with its wool-cashmere blend. It’s also the perfect silhouette for slipping on over a formal suit. And if it looks like rain, you can trust our Unlined Modern Mac to keep you nice and dry. You can always add a jaunty scarf to keep snug and add a pop of character if you’re worried about looking too staid. If temperatures are below freezing and you need to be outside for at least part of the day, pop on some gloves and a wool beanie hat. Keeping the accessories uniform – such as with our matching Merino Wool Hat and Scarf sets – will create a streamlined look. You’ll be thankful in the queue for the taxi on your way home.
