How to Dress for New Year’s Eve

Get ready to party the night away in Thomas Pink tailoring

NEW YEARS EVE

Whether you go all out or prefer to be in bed by midnight, New Year’s Eve stands out as a night of celebration, reflection, anticipation – and impeccable fashion.

So, as another year comes to a close and we count down to the arrival of 2024, it’s worth remembering that your outfit choice can set the tone for a truly memorable evening.

New Year’s Eve is the one night of the year when the dress code is usually full-on glamour. And if you’re going out out this year, then Thomas Pink tailoring is a sure-fire way of putting on the Ritz.

Thomas Pink Tailoring is a comprehensive collection of modern classics that are designed to last. As with our shirts, fabric is key, so we’ve gone above and beyond to source the very best. Our fine wool fabrics are woven in Yorkshire at heritage mills using natural processes that are kinder to the environment. The result is a beautiful and versatile collection, suitable for weddings, black-tie occasions and, of course, New Year’s Eve.

Jewel Tones

Elevate your winter style with our Green & Navy Tailored Fit Wool Black Watch Check Evening Jacket. Woven in Yorkshire from a traditional Black Watch check fabric by Abraham Moon, this piece combines heritage and style. With its relaxed styling, including a patch pocket and contrasting shawl collar, it's the perfect companion for a Thomas Pink evening shirt. Crafted from 100% wool, single-breasted, two-button design with a double vent – this jacket is not just an outfit, but a celebration of timeless elegance.

Check Mate

Houndstooth never goes out of style. The tight check pattern emerged in woven tweed centuries ago and hails from the Scottish lowlands, hence the reason it’s sometimes called “border tartan”. Popular all year round, plaid really comes into its own in winter. Our Tailored Fit merino houndstooth jacket – available in black & grey and an eye-catching oatmeal/brown – makes for an eminently stylish alternative to black tie, with a refined yet relaxed aesthetic that is at once timeless yet contemporary.

Fit for a king

Another dashing tartan is the regal Prince of Wales check, whose unique pattern is characterised by a combination of large and small puppytooth squares. It was originally known as Glenurquhart Estate Check and worn by staff of the Highland estate, where it caught the eye of the then Prince of Wales, King Edward VII. Though adopted by the monarch, it was his grandson, the fashionable and dapper Edward VIII, who popularised the pattern, and it’s been a staple of the royal family ever since, favoured by King Charles III and even the late Princess Diana.

For New Year’s Eve, channel a different kind of fashion royalty – the official king of cool, Steve McQueen (specifically in The Thomas Crown Affair), with our three-piece Prince of Wales check suit. This modern update uses high-quality wool woven by heritage Yorkshire mill Alfred Brown and will ensure you end 2023 on a high.

Oatmeal Tailored Fit wool silk woven unstructured jacket

Pure as silk

Another sleek alternative to black tie is our elegant oatmeal Tailored Fit wool silk woven unstructured jacket. The wool-silk blend is luxurious and refined, while the unstructured silhouette is contemporary and comfortable (and you won’t need to loosen your buttons by the stroke of midnight). The jacket is made in Portugal from wool-silk fabric woven in Yorkshire and naturally dyed to give it its distinctive light biscuit colour.

Top of the tux

It’s all well and good suggesting alternatives to black tie, but it’s an elegant ensemble you simply can’t go wrong with. Black tie became de rigueur after King Edward VII requested his tailor create a smoking jacket and matching trousers in 1885. The dapper look swept Edwardian Britain and became popular across the pond when it was adopted by members of the fancy Tuxedo Club in New York state (hence the term “tuxedo”).

Our black Tailored Fit pure wool evening jacket and matching pleated trousers are your go-to black-tie ensemble. The pure wool fabric is woven in Yorkshire by our friends at Alfred Brown and naturally dyed.
